Pair of Easy Chairs - Chinoiserie Navy Toile

Here are two simple chairs that Pierre had done years ago. The client wanted something new, and since these are now being used in a Travel business, she thought the Chinoiserie (oriental) toile was both beautiful, and appropriate. This project was done in August 2014.

After!

To better match the new fabric, Pierre decided that we should lacquer the legs in an almond colour, which turned out beautifully.

Pair of Art Deco Chairs - Grey

This was an interesting pair of chairs to work on. At first glance they didn't appear to be very old, but once we opened them up, we found that they were probably from the 1930s or 40s, perhaps early 50s. They have coiled backs, with straw and curled hair or moss stuffing, and the cushions are also sprung, and were stuffed with straw and felt/cotton.

As received:

The current cushion covers were already covering up previous layers:

Some of the corners/joints under the current upholstery were sloppy, so we made corrections on the new upholstery. Sadly I forgot to photograph these, but basically we tightened up the corners and had a sewn seam here.

A previous upholsterer had stuffed foam in between the springs. We don't know why. These blocks were removed.

Here is some of the old original stuffing.

The seat cushions turned out to have 3 layers on them. The floral, the orange, and then a deep blue.

Bare cushion (viewed from the side). You can sort of see the springs, which are sandwiched in layers of straw and felt/cotton.

Here are the finished chairs (only one shown). The wooden legs were also touched up.

Pair of Upholstered Arm Chairs - Royal Blue

These two chairs were fairly new, but one chair was lightly soiled, and the owner wanted to change the colour scheme. These two chairs also went with a loveseat which will be posted next.

Before:

Stripped down:

Pierre and I didn't like how they had attached the foam at the front, since it left a bit of a hollow, so this area was filled-in with cotton.

Pair of Ribbed-Back Arm Chairs - Checkered Black & Beige

Here is a pair of arm chairs we did a short while ago. They were still covered in the original fabric, which was at one point a light mint green & gold. The green had faded away, and the fabric was quite worn. In addition, the client wanted the wood refinished.

Before:

Once the frames were stripped and sanded, the client decided that she liked the frames as-is, with just a clear coat.

Here's one of the only "in-between" photos I took. It shows a mostly finished chair, with new webbing on the curved back for strength.

The original seat cushion padding was quite poor (a mix of shredded foam and cotton bits), and we replaced those with new foam.

NOTE: From a distance, the camera gives the fabric a really odd look because of the tight pattern (a basket weave in black and beige). For better photos of what the fabric looks like, scroll down to the photos of the individual chair.
